Any woman who has been pregnant knows what it feels like to have her breasts become sore and tender. But this feeling during the first few months is nothing to the pain that can occur when the milk first comes in. This is due to swelling in the veins and breasts themselves, as they expand and fill with milk.

But there are some pains that aren’t normal, such as heat in the breast, a fever, and a hardness that doesn’t go away after a feeding. This, along with trouble passing milk, can be a sign of mastitis, which can be a serious condition.

In order to prevent this from happening, you should do a few things every day. Not only will this prevent blockage and infection, but it will help you to produce more milk as well.

Applying heat to the breast in the form of a compress, or using hot water, is a great idea. You can do this whenever needed, but it is recommended you do it for ten minutes three times a day. If you are at the office try finding a private bathroom, then either fill up the sink, or run hot water over your breasts under the nozzle. Massage is also great.
